EXHIBITION
FLESH intends to emphasize the encounter between advancement of audiovisual technology and contemporary society. It is also a metaphor that signifies two aspects: biological entity of human body that transforms into digital entity (images, sounds, and texts) and video that shows its organic characters; grow in virtual spaces across spatial and temporal boundaries, transforms into various medium and progressively reproduces itself by the reason of virality.
OK. Video FLESH employs four integrated point of views as approach to perceive this situation. These fourth aspects represent this year OK. Video’s vision that will be presented at National Gallery of Indonesia:

[in]corporeal is a section that reveals the relation between “the body” and technology through video arts. Dealing with video, body is regarded simultaneously and parallel as physical as well as non-physical entity. Body, technology and art are keywords from this section. Video Performance thus considered as artistic medium that related to these three aspects. [in]corporeal presents oeuvres which mainly created by renowned international performance artists. Most of them had intensely worked with video and contribute powerful impact in global video art development.

Digital Viral is new notion in history of OK. Video Festival. Started from the consciousness of organic characteristic possessed in video, Digital Viral makes experiment to investigate and to read the pattern of video movement in virtual realm. The presence of video in virtual spaces which at the beginning served as entertainment and sociable device, now goes to the power of media and politic. This session also questions: does virtual activity, through social networks and video sharing, really lead us to the ultimate democratic society that may be able to unify people or in contrary, to break us apart? How far video could thrive in virtual area, a zone of representation and manipulation of reality?

This section purposes two conceptions: control and exposure of body. Camera, which profoundly penetrates the lives of people in society, has open possibility for these notions to become social and political evidences. Video as descendant of the advancement of technology, is one of the factors that evoke this obvious circumstance.
Camera has forced people to redefine all notions about “private” and “public”. Demarcation that separates them and all definition over any spaces that we might know, reappears to be re-identified with all its tensions.

To discover the new invention of visual language as social and cultural expression, OK. Video promotes young video artists to submit their works in competition program. OK. Video Festival focuses on non-narratives video works and opens for reconstructions, recording manipulations and an array of experiments of the audiovisual language. The festival accepts video works with various approaches. Three best video works will be rewarded and announced at the opening ceremony of OK. Video – The 5th Jakarta International Video Festival.

This section will present early canonical single channel videos, which are repeatedly mentioned in many historical essays on video arts yet undoubtedly haven’t been shown in Indonesia. With this presentation, we can see the major issues and concerns in the early stage of video art’s development.
*The title of this presentation is a pun of John Baldessari’s work, How We Do Art Now (1973).
